Why we need to step out from comfort zones

Imagine having walked a certain length around a central point several times. You have walked that same area enough times and made it “your own”. Then you’ve decided that you will put some sort of borders, boundaries to seclude and secure this area and that you do not wish to go outside of it.

You have decided to stay within those boundaries, not because you necessarily are completely content within this area – the Zone – but because it feels safe, known and what happens in it is predictable.

This might  feel right when you first established this protected circle, because it gave you a certain level or comfort and ease. And perhaps you have sat and moved around its boundaries thinking that you are content with it. You have just created a comfort zone!

However, the innate need of expansion that lies within your soul, triggers your curiosity to know how your life would be outside those borders. It creates the desire to taste something more, something different, to achieve something more or to become something greater. There are many times when you look out at the horizon that exists outside the Zone and you start thinking that it might be good for you to experience what’s out there.

However, these thoughts bring a great sense of anxiety and fear and they are so overwhelming, that do not allow you to make even a step outside the boundaries you have placed. Or maybe you attempted many times to come out of the Zone and you did not like it or did not have a good experience. So that makes you even more reluctant to go any further.

Now, though, what’s happening is that staying within an unfulfilling routine of beingness, begins to become an even more painful experience than the one you fear you might have outside the Zone. In addition, you see others who had the courage of stepping out of their comfort zones succeeding greater things than you. But you also see some others falling “flat on their face” when they stepped out of their zone. This inner battle – between staying within the Zone, or leaving it – becomes too much and the indecision feels as if something huge is tearing your heart apart. So what do you do?

Well, now you are in a critical point of your evolution. Decisions need to be made. The good news is that you still have choices. You are still the ultimate decision maker – at least for awhile. What are your choices? Let’s see:

1. You decide to pretend that the world outside of your boundaries does not exist and that where you are is OK for you. (But is it really?)
2. You decide to step out of your comfort zone with feelings of great discomfort and feeling un-centered. Most likely this will make you run back to your comfort zone.)
3. You prepare yourself first to face the unknown, to accept, handle and master it; you prepare to embrace the success from it as well as the lessons that can be learned from it. (This will probably need hard work and sheer determination to make this happen.)
4. You decide to neither stay in the Zone nor leaving it but rather expanding it a bit further. ( This is similar to the above but done in smaller, modest steps.)

There is no right or wrong decision here, however, if where you are proves to be unfruitful and unfulfilling for you in many ways, stepping out of your present comfort zone is most likely a step that you MUST take.

Here I would like to share with you a lovely poem on comfort zones which I’m sure you will find inspiring:

By Author Unknown

I used to have a comfort zone where I knew I wouldn’t fail.
The same four walls and busywork were really more like jail.
I longed so much to do the things I’d never done before,
But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor.
I said it didn’t matter that I wasn’t doing much.

I said I didn’t care for things like commission checks and such.
I claimed to be so busy with the things inside the zone,
But deep inside I longed for something special of my own.
I couldn’t let my life go by just watching others win.
I held my breath; I stepped outside and let the change begin.

I took a step and with new strength I’d never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone goodbye and closed and locked the door.
If you’re in a comfort zone, afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners were at one time filled with doubt.

A step or two and words of praise can make your dreams come true.
Reach for your future with a smile; success is there for you!

I really liked this poem which unfortunately its author is unknown. If you feel you are in a comfort zone and find it hard so step out of it, watch for my next blog entry where I will share with you an EFT tap-along which you might find helpful.
