3 self sabotaging excuses that stop you from taking action and lose opportunities

Many times, business people get busy with so many of things, and there are so many things, that have to do with keeping a business alive that they often lose track of the important small things that are so vital to keeping the dream alive. Some popular excuses are “I can’t afford it”, “I don’t have time” and “I have responsibilities at home” and these are all true to some extent but let’s look at how you can view these differently.

  •  I can’t afford it – As with most things, if you don’t spend money it is very difficult to make money. Perhaps you can find ways that you can save a few dollars here and there and then invest that savings into your business budget for marketing or the things that you need? Downgrade your cell phone plan or just look for ways to shave $25 a week from your personal budget. Many times we see that, for the things we really want we somehow magically find the money.  Often when we or our clients use this excuse is because we or they have not understood the value that something has in our life (or their life).  Maybe we don’t really want it bad enough.  If  we do want it bad enough and the cash is actually missing from our pocket then here is a helpful exercise. Take a pen and paper and  write down all the things you can do right now to earn money.  Go up to 50 ideas. Then act upon that list and those ideas that can bring you the maximum cash the easiest and fastest.
  •  I don’t have time – There never seems to be enough time for all the things that need to be done and those things that we want to do.  The clock has only 24 hours and that’s it.  But where doe these 24 hours go? Try sitting down and actually planning your day out and attempting to stick to your schedule. Not having a plan for your day to day activities is a huge mistake, especially if you are a business person. By writing a daily agenda and working hard to make it a new habit, you will hopefully be able to find some extra time in your day to get some things done that you didn’t think that you could. Won’t you feel great when you do?
  •  I have responsibilities at home – This is most certainly true and if you have a family, asking them to sacrifice is hard to do. Still, if you can manage your time more effectively by tackling #2 on this list, then you may be able to make time for all of it. Remember that the long term goal is actually to spend more time with your family. Small business owners and entrepreneurs often have to make a lot of sacrifices that most people would simply never be willing to do. Congratulate yourself on having the courage that other people will never have. Schedule time with your family and for your responsibilities at home just as if it was part of your work day. Once you settle into a routine, you’ll find that you can probably make time for all of it.

In the end, don’t forget that the idea is for you to be able to enjoy yourself more down the road. Give yourself time to rest and refuel your engines when you need to. Burning yourself out won’t do you or your business any good. Know that the sacrifices that you make now will make the pay-off down the road a lot  more sweet.

However, if you procrastinate, postpone or freeze into taking action because of FEAR then you will miss out from all those great opportunities that nock your door.

There is a great anonymous saying  which I have place on my wall over my desk: “Don’t worry that yo”l take a shot and you’ll miss.  The fact is, you’ll miss every shot your don’t take”. So, be bold take action and don’t worry about making mistakes.  Making mistakes is part of life and as long as we learn from them we are still winners.  We don’t win anything though if we remain stagnant.  TAKE YOUR SHOT!
